Essay

The study of eyeball structural components (cornea and retina) in the norm and under thyroid gland dysfunction was performed using the general histological, morphometric, electron microscopic, histochemical and lectin histochemical methods. The negative impact of hypo- and hyperthyroidism on the morphofunctional peculiarities and cytotopography of lectin receptors in the eyeball structural components has been shown. It has been detected, that in conditions of changes of metabolic processes the apoptotic processes in corneal and retinal structures intensify, degenerative changes in the neurons of all retinal layers take place, corneal and retinal thickness is changed and lectin receptors modification occurs. WGA and CNFA lectins may be recommended as selective histochemical markers of corneal keratocytes, retinal rods and cones, SNA and LABA lectins - as selective histochemical markers of parasol neurons of ganglionic retinal layer, WGA lectin - as marker of retinal horizontal and amacrine cells. Branch - medicine.
