Essay

On the basis of clinical material (study of 69 patients with histologically confirmed malignant neoplasm and 50 patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing chronic dialysis) it was proved, that catheterization of peripheral forearm veins for long-term chemotherapy is associated with the development of pathologic changes in all venous wall layers, thus excluding the possibility of their exploitation in accomplishment of anticancer treatment. An alternative vascular access - placement of arteriovenous fistula for long term anticancer therapy in case of contraindications to central vein catheterization – was developed and introduced into clinical practice; its safety, reliability, and long-term clinical use have been proved.
