Essay

The present dissertation is devoted to the substantiation of the theory of the oratorio genre as a component of the general theory of genres. On the basis of studying the historical ways of the development of the Western European and national oratorio of the 17th-21st centuries, the ideas about the genre picture of the world and structural and semantic invariant which together help to model the genre canon of the oratorio have been formed. The proposed theme is actualized by historical-sociocultural, theoretical-methodological and genre-communicative discourses of its research. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is that for the first time in the modern musicology one has modelled the genre canon of the oratorio, the semantic basis of which is the image of a believer – homo credens as a manifesting person of the mass consciousness of the Baroque era (based on the example of "Jephthah" by G. Carissimi), as well as the oratorio intonation, composition and dramaturgy. The oratorio plots have been analysed: from the birth of the genre – to the contemporary designs, which helped to develop the plot typology of the genre. The author's method of the analysis of the oratorio as a typical structure with its historically consistent genre semantics is proposed.
