Essay

The current thesis is the first research, which comprehensively analyzes the achievements of domestic and foreign, mainly Polish, historiography of foreign policy and diplomacy of the Republic of Poland during the period between 1989-2004. It has been found out that, despite the relevance of this topic for Ukraine, there is a lack of investigations dedicated to the issue. In fact, there are no studies aiming at reconstructing the process of development and implementation of the foreign policy of Warsaw for the period between the late XX and early XXI centuries in the Ukrainian historiography. In general, the state of scientific development of the problem shows the presence of the scientific interest to it. At the same time, the author's analysis of the historiography of the investigated issue showed an inadequate level and completeness of the source base on this topic in Ukrainian scientific literature and the absence of holistic foreign works, which called forth the commencement of the present thesis and its conceptual content. Taking into account all mentioned above, in search of essential facts we have scrutinized the archival materials of the Sectoral State Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine from the beginning of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland work, i.e from November 1991, till 2004, the last year of the chronological framework of the study – the year when Poland became the full-fledged member of the European Union. The recordings of the talks, diaries of the Ambassadors, employees of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland, reference materials about the country, as well as daily reviews of the foreign press and other annual information materials provided by the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland for the investigated period have been thoroughly processed. Thus, the main results that characterize the author's personal assets include the scientific novelty of the research, inasmuch as 40 unpublished aforementioned volumes of the Sectoral State Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, as well as materials of the Personal Archive of Hennadii Udovenko (1931-2013) related to the Republic of Poland, kept in the scientific library of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, were included in the scientific circulation.
