Essay

The research is focused on the study of the predominant emotive characteristics of D. H. Lawrence’s short stories. The novelty of the obtained results is manifested in the fact that quantitative-qualitative analysis of the linguistic representation of emotions in D. H. Lawrence’s short stories has been performed for the first time; the classification of emotive units expressed on different language levels has been proposed; the influence of the author’s worldview on the reflection of emotions in the text has been studied. It has been also shown that emotivity is a predominant feature of D. H. Lawrence’s short stories. With the help of a functional-stylistic approach and an integrated research methodology the main graphic, derivational, lexico-stylistic and syntactic-stylistic tools for the actualization of emotiveness in the texts of D. H. Lawrence were identified. A variety of the means expressing emotions in D. H. Lawrence’s short stories is represented on the lexical-stylistic level, on which the category of emotivity is verbalized through nomination, description and explication. The syntactic level of D. H. Lawrence’s short stories is represented by the rhetorical questions, elliptic sentences, inversion, syntactic parallelism.
