Essay

This thesis is a comprehensive linguistic research into scientific narratives, namely, narrative discursive fragments (NDFs) in Anglo-American scientific discourse. It should be noted that sometimes we observe total narratives, when the whole scientific text is written as a narration. We have analyzed NDFs through the prism of the categories of chronotope, eventfulness, focalization, and intertextuality. We have outlined such narratives’ types and subtypes in scientific discourse. In particular, we have defined two basic types of NDFs, namely, structural and argumentative ones. Quantitative analysis has enabled the comparison of NDFs in the fields of computer science and linguistics in terms of their field specificity. As a result, we have figured out a strong tendency towards narrativization in Anglo-American scientific discourse. For that matter, we have outlined several culture-specific narrative strategies and tactics. The object of our research is modern written Anglo-American scientific discourse, the subject – scientific narratives found in research articles and monographs in the fields of linguistics and computer science.
