Boichuk V. Representation of the Phenomenon of Pessimism in Modern English.

This thesis focuses on the study of the means of representation of the phenomenon of pessimism in Modern English from the theoretical perspectives of semasiology, onomasiology, functional linguistics, linguistic pragmatics, and communicative linguistics. Lexical and phraseological means designating the phenomenon of pessimism in Modern English have been singled out, their semantic features have been revealed and the corresponding lexico-phraseological field has been modelled. The lexical content, syntactic organization, stylistic features and peculiarities of non-verbal support of pessimistic utterances have been analyzed. The peculiarities of the phenomenon of pessimism as a constituent feature of the speaker’s communicative behaviour have been revealed. The structure of the communicative situation of realization of the speaker’s pessimism has been analyzed. Pragmatic aspects of pessimistic utterances and discourse specificity of the strategies for the expression of pessimism have been investigated. It has been proved that the representation of pessimism in Modern English is determined by its typological features as a psychological and worldview phenomenon.
