The thesis focuses on the identification and analysis of the verbal and nonverbal communicative means expressing misunderstanding in English artistic literary and film discourse. The research offers a cognitive-pragmatic differentiation of the following phenomena: proper misunderstanding, false misunderstanding and false understanding. Proper misunderstanding has been defined as an inadequate or incomplete cognitive operation of comprehending an interlocutor's message information content (of which the subject of misunderstanding can be aware or unaware) that can get communicatively explicit or latent.
