TThe thesis focuses on identifying the confessional modality of the early 20th century French novel through the prism of the dialogue between literature and music. The chosen topic has outlined two main problems. On the one hand, this is the interaction between literature and music as two distinct semiotic systems. On the other, the researchon confession as a narrative modality of such novels as «Journey to the End of the Night» by L.-F. Celine, «Nausea» by J.-P. Sartre, «Viper's Tangle» by F. Mauriac and «The Diary of a Country Priest» by G. Bernanos. Interdisciplinary nature of the research necessitated resorting to diverse methodological tools. The author actively reflects, synthesizes and critically exploresthe positions and concepts of the works of leading French scholars in the field of literary criticism, semiotics, cultural studies, reception theory, epistemology, hermeneuticsand linguistics. The author provides a nuanced analysis of musico-literary discourse in French novel, drawing upon the works of the Ukrainian scholar S. Matsenka, semioticians U. Eco and E. Tarasti, French researchers on the intertextual and intersemiotical aspects of a novel G. Genette and A.-M. Harmat. Proceeding from the core statements of these works, the author of the thesis deals with a number of controversial theoretical problems: the possibility of creating musical narratives within the framework of a literary text, the ways and conditions for the interaction of two semiotically different arts etc.
