Essay

The research focuses on the study of the negotiator’s (the mediator’s) communicative behaviour in the English fictional conflict discourse. A negotiator as a third neutral party applies mediation strategies to negotiate the conflict between opposite parties in accordance with the principles, approaches and mediation stages. Flexibility of the meditative tactics depends on the individual, social and ethical peculiarities of the conflict discourse participants as well as the typology of conflict frames. The peculiarities of the six study stages from theoretical base examination of scientific problem to the key characteristics of a mediation strategy have been distinguished. Methodology of the mediation strategy topicality in English fictional conflict discourse of the XX – XXI centuries is provided. The concepts of evaluative and facilitative mediation strategies are investigated. It is defined that within the evaluative mediation approach, a mediator acts as a peacemaker between the parties via expressing his subjective attitude that is highly recommended. Facilitative strategy of mediation represents the classical approach to the mediator’s activity. It is closely correlated with the mediator’s neutrality as a distinguish feature of the third party in a conflict. The differences between the usage of mediation strategies in American and British linguo-cultures are identified.
