Essay

The thesis focuses on complex research of the compositional and architectonic speech forms of Virginia Woolf’s novels. The results outlined in the paper provide the insight into the lexical-and-semantic and syntactic properties of the functional text types representing author’s voice (compositional-speech forms) and character’s voice (architectonic-speech forms). The research paper presents description of the predominant stylistic figures of speech, which contribute to the expressive richness of the novels in question. Besides it provides the analysis of the influence of the structural-and-semantic type of the compositional-speech forms on the occurrence of various types of expressive stylistic devices, including those on lexical and syntactic levels. The existing research methodologies of narrative structure in fiction were discussed. A substantial study of the modern research approaches within the scope of stylistics and text linguistics has resulted in development of the complex methodological procedure for analysis of the compositional and architectonic speech forms, comprising the novels by Virginia Woolf. The study sheds light upon the linguistic peculiarities of the interrelated textual constituents of the narrative structure of modernist texts. Key words: stylistics, text, narrative structure, architectonic-speech forms, compositional-speech forms, dialogue, monologue, direct speech, indirect speech, free indirect speech, stylistic figures of speech, expressive syntax.
