Essay

The present dissertation is devoted to the substantiation of the plurality of forms of the manifestation of melos in the vocal music of the 20th century, and on this basis – to the rethinking of the theory of melos. The set goal (the comparative analysis of the multi-genre and multi-style manifestations of melos as a phenomenon of the sound-and-image thinking) and its analytical testing allowed determining the theory of melos by the paradigmatic discourse of the modern interpretation. It has been proved that the established notions about the essence of the melody of the classical-romantic style somewhat offset the national character of the regional forms of singing. The functional-structural parameters of melos deepen the genre-and-style amplitude due to the traditional (folk and church) forms of the performance; the lyrical-epic consciousness affects the state of the genre-and-style system of the vocal music and appears as a multicultural phenomenon, related to the Chinese and Slavic mentality. The general melodic formulas, fret and rhythm structures, along with the nationally defined differences, have been revealed.
