Essay

There were examined 140 patients: 82 patients presented with AH and co-existent stage III COPD in the remission phase. The control group comprised 58 patients with stage II first-degree/second-degree AH. Both groups were divided into subgroups: basic therapy (BT) or BT with L-arginine. L-arginine as a donor of nitric oxide for potentiation of vaso- and cardioprotective effects of complex pathogenetic therapy of patients with combined pathology is proposed. Thus, the research work confirmed the presence of AH to aggravate the clinical course of COPD. Treatment with L-arginine was proven to be accompanied by the improvement of blood pressure profile, bronchial patency, quality of life, structural and functional heart parameters, and the increase in endothelium-dependent vasodilation. L-arginine was proven to reduce the activity of proinflammatory cytokines in the patients with AH and co-existent COPD. Key words: arterial hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arginine. Branch-Medicine.
