Essay

The dissertation focuses on objectivizing the concept HUMAN BEING by anthropocentric comparative phraseological units of the English language. Such phraseologisms are identified and systematically described for the first time in the linguistics. Attention is paid to the analysis of their structural-semantic features which foster the whole units to be an effective expressive means in the system of nominations of the human being in order to objectivize the concept HUMAN BEING. The dichotomous approach is employed to model the structure of the given concept and the principles of its conceptual-linguistic organization are defined. The significant components of the concept HUMAN BEING – associative-figurative, evaluative, cultural-specific and gender ones are under study from the point of the semantics of anthropocentric comparative phraseological units. An extensive ideographic, cognitive and linguocultural investigation of the anthropocentric comparative phraseologisms is carried out according to the parameters of the human being’s external and internal worlds. The corpora analysis is used to show whether these comparative phraseologisms are / are not registered in the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. A glossary of anthropocentric comparative phraseological units which objectivize the concept HUMAN BEING is compiled.
