Essay

The study focuses on the structural and semantic features of compound term-nouns. Highly productive, less productive and unproductive word-building models of compound term-nouns formed by word-compounding, stem-compounding and conversion are clarified. The study sheds light upon the component structure of the lexical meaning of compound term-nouns; the semantic relations between the components of the compound term-nouns. The novelty of this dissertation is based on the attempt to analyze the word-building of compound term-nouns in electrical engineering. Compound term-nouns were systematized according to their semantics, the degree of abstraction, the degree of stylistic features, the degree of frequency, the functional coloring. It was established that compound term-nouns of the analyzed field can have semantic relation: synonymic, antonymic and polysemic. The pragmatic meaning of compound term-nouns in electrical engineering, the relation between semantics and pragmatics in the structure of compound terminological units were described. The main common functions performed by compound term-nouns in the field of electrical engineering were identified and analyzed, among which are nominative, refinement, communicative, word-building, syntactic, text-building, compressive, functional and pragmatic. Key words: scientific functional style, scientific and technical text, compound term-noun, structural aspect, semantic aspect, word-building meaning, word-building model, stem-building, word-building, conversion, functional aspect, pragmatic aspect.
