Essay

The thesis is devoted to investigation of the structure and clustering processes of fullerenes in polar / nonpolar liquid systems. The main attention is paid to analysis of the possible causes of the fullerenes’ aggregation in systems with different polarities and a comparison of the clustering processes in liquid systems with fullerenes C70 and C60. The formation of aggregates and their reorganization were observed by small-angle neutron scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering methods. The method of dynamic light scattering was applied to supplement the analysis of experimental data on small-angle diffraction. The solvatochromic effect in the systems of C70 and C60 / toluene / N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone was observed by UV-Vis spectroscopy technique. The correlation between changes in the optical absorption spectra and the aggregation of fullerenes in toluene / N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone systems were analyzed. It was shown that the main cause of solvatochromic effects in the studied systems could be associated with the formation of donor-acceptor complexes between fullerene and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone molecules.
