Vovk O. Verbal representation of Horror in English Multimodal Discourse

The topicality of the dissertation is determined by the focus of modern linguosemiotic and semantic studies on tracing verbal elements pertaining to the emotion of horror as genre characteristics of literary and cinema discourse. Horror has also become a popular topic within multimodal studies, which allows to see how verbalization of horror is translated and transformed in the cinema discourse. The research addresses the following issues for the first time: it determines the ways and means of intersemiotic translation of emotionality from verbal to film discourse as parts of broader multimodal discourse; highlights the main means of horror emotion representation in the narratives and language of literary texts and films of horror genre; modifies the methodology of intersemiotic translation of narrative and image-bearing elements representing or referring to the emotion of horror in text and film; summarizes and describes key genre features of American horror stories and films of the second half of the 20th century to early 21st century from the perspective of emotivity; discusses the dependence of non-verbal plane upon verbal in multimodal discourse of screen adaptations.
