Essay

The present dissertation is devoted to the substantiation of the specificity of the embodiment of the sonata genre for the trombone in the creative works of foreign and Ukrainian composers of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st centuries. For the first time in the Ukrainian musicology the present dissertation has presented the complex development of this phenomenon in the light of the organology of the instrument and the specifics of the reproduced genre in the context of the concept of "the chamber and instrumental ensemble". The analytical sketches offered in the dissertation represent two main varieties of trombone sonatas in the creative works of foreign and Ukrainian composers of the defined period: 1) the conceptual-concert one with the internal distribution on the trombone and piano duet (Sonata for the trombone and piano op 41 by P. Hindemith) and the ensemble with a great quantity of the participants (Sonata for the trombone, 12 stringed instruments and piano by J. Matej); 2) the chamber one in two variants – trombone-piano (Sonatina for the trombone and piano by K. Serotsky) and solo-trombone (Sonata for the trombone solo by B. Childs).
