Essay

The object of the research is presented by works of Ukrainian and English writers (“Vanity Fair” by William Thackeray, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde, “Dlia Domashnioho Ohnyshcha” (“For the Home Fire”) by Ivan Franko, “Misto” (The City”) by Valerian Pidmohylnyi). The results and novelty: it is the first time when an attempt to identify and investigate the artistic-semiotic model “life is a fair” in the works by W. Thackeray, O. Wilde, I. Franko and V. Pidmohylnyi in the perspective of modern comparative literature was made; the literary-semiotic model “life is a fair” in a number of works of Ukrainian and English literature is systematically considered; a comparative-typological comparison of the works by V. Thackeray, O. Wilde, I. Franko and V. Pidmohylnyi was made. The field of usage: the main provisions of the research can be used in the process of further study of the functioning of artistic and semiotic models in a certain work of literature or a number of works; in the formation of a theoretical manual on the algorithm for detecting the literary model; in the practice of teaching history of Ukrainian and foreign literature of the second half of the nineteenth – early twentieth century; in the scientific explorations of modern comparative studies.
