Essay

This dissertation is devoted to the study of lexicographic and structural-semantic peculiarities of the eponymous terms of the English professional language of medicine. The study of terms has been carried out in line with the structural-semantic linguistic paradigm. In this study the structural types of terms are distinguished and analysed, their modifications and efficiency are identified, paradigmatic relations in the corpus of terms are described, and sources of proprial components of clinical terms are characterized. Our own semantic classification of proper names and appellatives within the eponymous terms is proposed, quantitative characteristics of each thematic group are defined, the most productive core components of the eponymous terms are identified. The cases of secondary nomination in the formation of eponymous terms, reflected in such stylistic means as metaphor, metonymy, simile, allusion, pun, pleonasm, euphemism, paradox, elliptical constructions and repetitions, are examined. Considerable attention paid to standardization and unification of the proprial component of eponyms. Elaborated recommendations for fixation of clinical eponyms in lexicographic sources will contribute to the unification and standardization of medical terminology as a whole. The method of compiling a dictionary-reference of eponymous terms is proposed in the study. The macro- and microstructure of the dictionary has been developed, the principles of transcoding and transformation of proper names have been suggested. Keywords: eponymous terms, professional language, proper name, synonyms, homonyms, polysemy, thematic groups.
