Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the definition of liturgical symbolism in opera music of Russian and Ukrainian composers. The dissertation proposes a systematic approach to the analysis of operas, the content of which includes Christian symbols, elements of worship. Its specificity is revealed at the levels of stage composition, dramaturgy and genre and intonational conception of work. The material of fourteen operas identifies the spheres of Christian symbolism realization (general idea, dramaturgy, musical techniques, libretto text) and key religious and ethical problems (conscience, love, chosen path). As a result of complex analysis of the operas of Russian and Ukrainian composers, their ideological and stylistic connections with the concept of conversion (Transfiguration), resurrection, with the Christian sacraments, rites, elements of worship, with certain religious and ethical attitudes, with the author's interpretations of Christian symbols, the presence of citations and allusions to liturgical texts, to the lives of saints, psalms, prayers, etc. are revealed. Based on the analysis of works of contemporary Russian (R. Shchedrin) and Ukrainian (O. Kozarenko, O. Shchetinskyi, L. Dychko) composers, we can conclude that the opera art of the late XX - beginning of the XXI century acquires a line of originality, significantly updating musical and linguistic possibilities of the opera genre on the one hand, on the other - it demonstrates an appeal to the Christian foundations of culture, to liturgical symbolism, to ethical values related to the revival of religiosity and consciousness.
