Essay

In the dissertation the style of English keyboard music of the second half of XVI – beginning of XVII centuries is scrutinized on the musical material of the Fitzwilliam Virginal book. Complex method of musical style study is used in the work. Modern concepts of musical style are corrected and supplemented with materials from historical narrative sources relevant to the epoch. Peculiarities of individual composer manners of W. Byrd, J. Bull, P. Philips, G. Farnaby are marked out. In the dissertation an interconnection of English keyboard, consort and vo-cal music of the second half of XVI – beginning of XVII centuries is explored; the repertoire of the Fitzwilliam Virginal book is examined in the context of English musical practice of that time.
