The dissertation is devoted to research polychronion ? a unique genre of Ukrainian music tradition, which functions in the main spheres of modern cultural space: church and secular. Polychronion is considered in the context of the functioning of the ancient tradition of verbal or singing wishes for many years of happy life (mnoholitstvuvannia), which conceptually is embodied in the form of a concise greeting formula "many years". Based on the analysis of a diverse source base, which includes historical, musicology, cultural, theological and folklore works, the genesis and functioning of the phenomenon in Ukrainian culture are explored. A large stratum of Ukrainian musical culture ? polychronion, which includes samples of the oldest church monophony of the 16th-17th centuries, works of Ukrainian and foreign composers from the 18th and 21st centuries, church and folk variants of the singing of polychronions, carols and feast songs with the wish of longevity, were collected, systematized and introduced into scientific circulation.
