Essay

The possibility of embodying any genre through a variational form is considered and the application of the concept of “genre form” is proposed - works written in the genre of variations are embodied in the same variational form. It is pointed out that the use of the form of variations, in which the genres of variations are embodied, is Rachmaninoff’s appeal to quotations in order to create a certain genre form. Thus, in “Variations on a Theme of Chopin” and “Variations on a Theme of Corelli” a single genre form is created, and in “Russian Rhapsody” and “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” the genre of rhapsody is embodied in the form of double variations. The concept of “quotation” is introduced in the context of the study that in music means the constant use of borrowed material (someone else’s or one’s own) in the process of general development of the drama of a musical work. It is noted that quotation is one of the main compositional principles in the works of S. Rachmaninoff.
