Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of verbal and musical integrity of the ancient Ukrainian monody as an integral multilevel system which made it possible to identify the shaping components that determine its artistry. The research objects are festive sticherons in the Ukrainian and Belarusian noteline Heirmologions of the late 16th–18th centuries, the subjects are poetic and musical texts of the ancient Ukrainian monody as the phenomenon of verbal and musical integrity. The research source base consists of eight noteline Ukrainian and Belarusian Heirmologions (seven manuscripts and one facsimile edition) of the late 16th–18th centuries. The analytical material of the research consists of 248 festive sticherons of Mezhyhiria noteline Heirmologion (1649), a complex analysis was applied to six of them. The church Slavonic texts of monodic liturgical hymns are taken as examples of liturgical literature. They are musically embodied in monodic chanting or in choral polyphony. Due to their intrinsic value, they have been studied as an artistic phenomenon using methods of structural analysis, which had become widespread in the literary studies of the 20th century and other areas of humanities. Given that the verbal text of a monody is its primary basis, its structural levels, symbolism and metaphorical poetics predetermined by lexical composition of liturgical hymns are studied. The church hymnography texts are mainly parable, homiletic due to the widespread use of rhetorical figures and tropes: rearrangement of words, omission of necessary or use of “extra” lexical elements. Tropes change the usual meaning of words, give them a figurative meaning, they have the same role as popevkas in a musical formation of a monody. Compared to the almost unchanged form of a liturgical text, its musical content has undergone more significant changes. This manifested itself not only in the historical transition from monody to polyphony, but also in the gradual musical and intonational changes within each of these systems. The peculiar functioning of language in monodic liturgical hymns – its fluidity and melody, divinely inspired, prayer, angelic sound – is revealed. Involvement in mediaevalism of the phonemic analysis method made it possible to identify the characteristic sound organization of a poetic text, the peculiar phonemic features that affect its perception. A complex study of monodic liturgical hymns made it possible to identify figurative and semantic interaction of words and music in them. The sticheron composition “Pridite vozraduemsia Gospodevi”, its plot correspond to homiletics laws. It contains rhetorical figures, thanks to which its theological essence and emotional content are emphasized. Phonemic and lado-intonation analysis of a text is carried out. Such a complex approach raises the sound organization of the ancient Ukrainian monody to the new level of understanding.
