The dissertation presents one of the principal aspects of expressiveness in piano music – pictorial and coloristic one, that gives rise to the phenomenon of synesthesia in perception of this art form. The paper formulates and substantiates a hypothesis about the mental and historical-and-cultural basis of tone-painting in Ukrainian piano music, according to the fundamental characteristics.
