Essay

The research is aimed at identifying the genre and stylistic peculiarities of Hildegard of Bingen’s songs in the context of medieval traditional liturgical monody. Today, Hildegard's work is presented to researchers and listeners in all its diversity. The Saint’s long stay in the monastery of a certain geographical region (Disibodenberg, Germany), living according to the established strict ideological and religious traditions of the orders, her active life and social position (traveling with sermons, correspondence with famous theologians and public figures of the time, meeting with the Pope of Rome) and, ultimately, the establishment of a separate monastery in Rupersburg, significantly influenced the style of the Saint’s works, some areas of which share a common idea, which has become a constant in her activities. It is determined that the musical style of Hildegard of Bingen, while being formed in the general environment of monastic spiritual life of the 12th century, on the one hand, coincides with regional Western traditions and the main trends of the liturgy of the Benedictine and Cistercian orders, which affected primarily the genre and style features of the songs included in the Symphonia Armonie Celestium Revelationum collection. On the other hand, the musical style of the Saint is a unique phenomenon of the spiritual culture of the Middle Ages, the «core» of which became the «innovative» genre of the era, the liturgical drama Ordo Virtutum.
