Essay

The dissertation paper is devoted to a comprehensive study of US military cooperation with European allies during the early period of Cold War and the development of alied military structures in Europe in the 1940s - 1960s. Based on a wide range of sources, the theoretical basis and features of the practical implementation of the American-European military partnership in the period under study are considered. The study pays special attention to the formation of doctrinal and treaty bases of US military cooperation with European states, like The Deterrence Doctrine, Washington Treaty and formation of NATO, the doctrine of mass retribution and the doctrine of flexible response. The interrelation of these doctrines and international treaty documents that ensured their legalization, as well as the impact of the development of military theories and technologies on the evolution of these doctrines are considered. Special attention is paid to NATO-France relations and France's withdrawal from NATO military structures in 1966, which caused rebuilding of NATO infrastructure in Western Europe and changing the balance between Eurocentric and Atlanticist concepts of the development of bloc military structures in Western Europe and ensuring collective security in the realities of confrontation with the USSR and its satellites.
