Essay

The study showed that faster recovery of calcium and PTH in the blood was observed among patients receiving more intensive therapy for hypocalcemia: calcium supplements in combination with an analogue of the active metabolite of vitamin D. Based on the study, we determined the optimal treatment regimen for postoperative hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy: alfacalcidol 1 μg / day in combination with calcium carbonate (2-3 g / day) until stable normalization of PTH, calcium and phosphorus in the blood. To date, there are no studies evaluating isolated therapy with an active metabolite of vitamin D after thyroidectomy. We concluded that such therapy can be prescribed to patients with asymptomatic hypocalcemia and PTH levels above 10 pg / ml, especially in the presence of vitamin D deficiency.
