Essay

The thesis is devoted to the study of the conversives structure, semantic and functional characteristics in modern English. The conversives studying has been carried out in line with the structural-semantic and communicative-functional paradigms with some particular attainments of the linguocognitive scientific paradigm, which makes possible to apply the integrative approach to conversion. The main approaches to the phenomenon of conversion in line with system-structural, communicative-functional and cognitive paradigms are analyzed and linguistic concepts working definitions used in the work are formulated. The conversion types and limits, and conversives formation regularities are described and the conversives study peculiarities at different stages of linguistic thought development are observed. The parts-of-speech conversives features are characterized, the semantic transitions features are described, the conversives structural models and their modifications are determined. The main focus is made on the generatives and derivatives semantics in the composition of conversion pairs. In order to establish regular semantic changes in the conversives formation, the conversion semantic models are singled out, quantitative characteristics of each model are established and the most productive transitions from the generative to the derivative are described. The conversion linguo-creative potential in English is analyzed, the conversion relationships with synonymy and polysemy are studied, and the role of analogy as a way of conversives forming is established. The examples from the dictionaries of neologisms are analyzed taking into account the socio-economic preconditions of their appearance, the peculiarities of the use of neologisms as a reflection of the linguistic picture of the human world are described, quantitative characteristics of the spread of neologisms-conversives in different time periods are established.
