Essay

The thesis investigates the romantic concept of national identity in Slavonic literatures on the example of K. Zap’s work and, in particular, for the first time a comprehensive study of his creative work in the context of the Czech Renaissance is conducted. The author substantiated the importance of K. Zap’s work in the formation of the national identity, determined the relevance of the research topic at the present stage, proved that K. Zap’s works were not given sufficient attention. According to the author, it is necessary to translate the third volume of «Mirrors of Life in Eastern Europe» – «Travels and Walks in Halychyna Lands». The author believes that the work of K. Zap is a documentary literature, within which several types can be distinguished: journalism, chronicle, regional natural history and art essays, historical biographical story. The author proves that K. Zap’s work is an individual model of the strategy of national existence because it reflected the ideology of the Czech revival and concerned the most important spheres of life in the Czech society. The research demonstrates that the concept of national identity has an interdisciplinary character, that this concept allows us to analyse the nation-building process. The author substantiates that literature is an effective factor of national existence and therein lies its performative aspect, the work emphasizes the importance of romanticism in the creation of nation. The study reasons the existence of the ethnoimagological aspect of K. Zap’s work. He wrote about the culture, literature, life of the Slavonic peoples – this literary reflection is a «literary imagology» («Mirror of Eastern Europe», especially «Travels and Walks in Halychyna», reviews of Polish literature, K. Zap’s translations from Polish, Russian literature, a historical short novel «Halshka, Princess of Ostroh»).
