Essay

The dissertation analyzes the problem of the German vector of US foreign policy during the First World War on the basis of a wide range of sources; transformations of the position of the American government and society towards Germany and its actions at different stages of the war; the role of Germany in the development of US foreign policy in 1914-1918. The author determined that despite the declaration of neutrality in the summer of 1914, one of the key vectors within which American foreign policy developed was Germany. The analyzed array of historical sources testifies to the manifestations of "German policy" in most foreign policy issues facing the United States in 1914-1918. Particular attention is paid to the issues of "unlimited submarine warfare" and US-German peace talks. In the meantime, attention is paid to less extensive but important aspects of the relationship: the confrontation between the United States and Germany in the international arena; the role of US-German trade and its place in the development of US foreign policy; policy towards the German diaspora in the United States; humanitarian missions to Germany and the countries occupied by it. A separate issue reveals the role of US-German relations in concluding a truce and ending the First World War.
