Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the works of the outstanding Polish composer, pianist, teacher and conductor M. Moszkowski (1854–1925). The versatility of different activities of M. Moszkowski in the field of piano music requires understanding of his personality as a universal musician, but still with a bias towards performance, as it is this type of master’s activity that was decisive and influenced others. Therefore, it is quite obvious that all the works of M. Moszkowski became a kind of projection of his brilliant performance. Studying the creative life of M. Moszkowski, comparing different, sometimes contradictory, data about him, allow not only to much more accurately reconstruct the facts of his biography, but also, above all, to see a particular person and try to understand his inner world, reflecting the artist’s value system. A small number of sources found by the author of the work allow us to face some manifestations of the artist’s personality, his manner of communication, his inherent sense of aristocracy, nobility, respect for other people, unsurpassed sense of humor, and so on. Based on the analysis of piano pieces of different genres by M. Moszkowski, the individual attitude of the composer to tradition, the free choice of figurative and stylistic priorities has been shown. The difficulties of many of them lie not so much in the texture itself, but in the ways of using the instrument, as well as in the performing tasks set by the author, which will be impossible without the concentration of the pianist’s hearing. M. Moszkowski is a vivid example of a universal personality who demonstrated not only her musical (composer, performing) talents, but also an outstanding pedagogical talent, editorial and organizational skills.
