Essay

The dissertation focuses on the study of communication verbs in modern English based on the texts from the British National Corpus. A complex approach to the study of communication verbs on lexical, grammatical and text levels was conducted. Classes of communication verbs were singled out and their functional characteristics were identified. Synonymic sets and antonymic pairs of communication verbs and their models in which communication verbs were used were established. Peculiarities of communication verbs functioning according to the classes they belong to were found. Characteristics of communication verbs usage as elements of cohesion on the textual level in fiction, scientific, spoken and publicistic texts were identified. It was validated that cohesive links are most fully manifested in fiction text, the least – in scientific texts of science (physics, chemistry, applied science, etc.) Communication verbs form the basis of cohesive links in the text.
