The dissertation presents the findings of a comprehensive study of the system of emotive verbs as the means of emotion verbalization and manifestation of the category of emotivity in English from the standpoint of traditional lexical semantics, corpus approach and cognitive linguistics. In the course of the work, English emotive verbs have been inventoried on the basis of various sources. The application of the WordNet thesaurus and the data of the sentiment-lexicons contributed to the identification of the emotive verbs and their relations in the language system based on objective criteria. The use of corpus data enabled the identification of the verbs with potential emotive meaning. In particular, it concerns the study of semantic prosody of verbs in the COCA. English emotive verbs constitute a lexical-semantic system that can be subjected to lexicometric parameterization. The parameters of this system are paradigmatic (synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy) and syntagmatic (the models of valency, predicate-argument structure, collocability) relations within it determining the significance of the lexical-semantic group under research in the lexical-semantic system of the English verb in general. The systemic analysis of this kind appears beneficial for the study of the structure of the mental lexicon of English speakers.
