Essay

A dissertation for the scholarly degree of Candidate in Philology in the speciality 10.02.04 – Germanic languages. – Ivan Franko Lviv National University. Lviv, 2021. The present thesis is concerned with the historical word formation from the English verb. The research is focused on contact derivatology and the peculiarities of MatPat-analysis of borrowed verbs. The evidence on verbs and shared-root derivatives as reflected in historical dictionaries has been taken into account. Diachronic corpora have been used. The data on Middle English verbs and derivatives were integrated into a model of further lexical evolution of derivation. The reconstruction of lexicogenesis rests on the textual prototypes of lexemes and parametric data representation. Verbs of French lineage and Latinate verbs prove to be sensitive to both contact and extension circumstances in historical word formation. Complete lists of lexemes have been compiled and time-distributed combinability of derivatives has been obtained. The archaic verbs and derivatives have been marked. Coinage, pair and single verb insertions as well as default, variant and precedent suffixes are distinguished. The recreation of historical word formation and paradigm calculus proceed from the sequences of lexemes and age differences of textual prototypes. Documented cases of suffix variance in shared-root derivation have been established. The description expounds on paradigm extension owing to parallel derivatives. The hybridity of derivatives and their paradigms has been assessed from the standpoint of contact-induced derivation and historical sociolinguistics. The developed query-based framework provides exhaustive lists of examples as well as evidence-driven graphs and is believed to be conducive to a functional-cognitive analysis of word formation in English. The research has been complemented with four appendices.
