The paper describes the gradual process of step-wise rethinking of the Protestant mission in the modern history of Ukraine, which has marked a transition from filling the information vacuum with a sermon to a holistic mission, which includes not only a developed social service, but also examples of patriotism and defending a civil position, which has attracted the attention of the social environment. For the first time in this context, the study not only presents the general trends of Ukrainian Protestantism during the period of independence (until 2022) but also pays special attention to specific aspects or areas of social service that have become relevant in the post-Maidan period. Among these aspects is the deployment of large-scale humanitarian work in the setting of the government’s lack of capacity to cope with all implications of the war started in 2014 in the Eastern part of the country (the motivation of Christian volunteers and the society’s response to their activities are considered). As a distinct aspect of social activity, the study thoroughly examines the range of positions that Ukrainian Protestants take in such social domains as defending family values in public space and opposing the so-called gender ideology. As for the congregation’s response to the challenges of recent years, the paper examines both the external side of pro-family activity, expressed in public events and street actions, and the internal side, expressed in Protestant journalism and polemics of opinion leaders. Another aspect is the attempt of Protestant churches to rethink and draw the attention of Ukrainian society to the ideas of the European Reformation in an interfaith format (which took place during the celebration of the 500th anniversary of this event at the state level in 2017, and continued later). The paper not only examines the organizational component but also evaluates the positives and drawbacks of anniversary and post-anniversary projects and concepts. It tracks the main directions of opinion among late Protestants regarding the reformation of Ukrainian society and their attempts to reflect on the anniversary. The study analyzes the attempt of Protestant leaders to consolidate their leadership positions after the celebration of the anniversary through the Reformation Movement and the public organization "All-Ukrainian Council". Based on the examples of the above areas of activity, it was established that the range of positions and the space for discussions indicate the desire of Protestants to influence Ukrainian society in order to reform it on the basis of Biblical values, and at the same time the lack of a single social doctrine that would meet all the requirements of the present age, the lack of a common vision of ways to overcome crisis situations, and the consensus on how to respond to certain challenges. It was also revealed that Protestant activities in Ukrainian realities are in most cases manifested at the grassroot level, this makes it similar to the civil society that has been developed in Ukraine and has started the process of self-organization in order to express its will without being guided by instructions from any center of power. Therefore, a large number of Protestant initiatives can be considered as part of the civil society’s activities. The paper proves that active social and civil position of many Ukrainian protestants offers an example of the alternative society model based on reconsidered Biblical values, while still being democratic, open for dialogue and capable of decisive, but peaceful initiatives inspired by the values of liberty and the principles of accountability. Protestants believe that following Biblical values can help Ukraine rebuild its society, preserve its statehood, and overcome the crisis.
