Essay

Metallic amorphous systems, produced at various conditions of quenching and of further treatment, as well as polycrystalline systems, irradiated by high energy metal and inert gas ions, were investigated. The aim of the research was to study interconnection between optical properties of the materials with their atomic-electronic structure. Measurements were carried out by means of spectral and angular ellipsometry along with neutron diffraction and scanning electron microscopy methods. The ways in which bombardment by metal and inert gas ions modify the optical properties of polycrystalline metals are clarified. Peculiarities of the optical properties are associated with surface microrelief changes due to ion implantation and deposition of corresponding films. The ways of atomic-electronic structure modification for amorphous metallic alloys with various thermodynamical conditions of quenching and further long-term neutron irradiation were studied. Most of the results are new. It is intended to implem ent the results to create new, steady to ion irradiation, metallic materials.
