Essay

The world's largest gypsum karst caves in the Western Ukraine, the hydrogeological conditions of sulphate karst development in the Miocene sediments. Origin of the caves and their hydrogeological role are examined. Methods of speleogenetic analysis and the complex of karstological-hydrogeological methods are applied. Main factors of speleogenesis are revealed; it is proved that the maze cave systems are formed under conditions of a confined aquifer and general upward water circulation across the gypsum bed. Theoretic principles of artesian speleogenesis are developed, a new regional speleogenetic model is suggested, evolution of the Miocene aquifer system is reconstructed. The area of application is hydrogeology and engineering geology of karst.
