Essay

It was found that in cholesteric blue phases in addition to circular birefringence small linear birefringence exists which is caused by surface-induced anisotropy and effects of spatial dispersion of higher orders. It was showh that applying of magnetic field leads to decrease of temperature region of blue phase supercooling. It was concluded that the contribution of surface-induced anisotropic layer must be taken into account in the investigations of polarization parameters of isotropic liquid of cholesterics. It was shown that the selective reflection properties of cholesteric blue phases can be implemented in thermography.
