Essay

The growth technologies are developed and optically qualitative barium borate single crystals of both structural phases are grown. The microhardness, microfragility, linear thermal expantion and electroconductivity for single crystals of a- and b-phases are investigated. The values of all piezooptical and elastooptical coefficients for b-BaB2O4 crystals are obtained and the coefficient of acoustooptical quality for these crystals is determined. It is shown that b-BaB2O4 crystals are perspective acoustooptical materials. The high light efficiency of X-ray luminescence for a-BaB2O4 crystals is ascertained and the perspectives for development of detectors of ionized radiation on the basis of these crystals are shown. The pyroelectric scintillation in b-BaB2O4 crystals in wide themperature region is ascertained.
