In the thesis the circumstances of the Ukrainian prisoner of war and internees stay in camps of several European countries during World War I and six postwar years are investigated on the basis of a wide range of archival sources. The character and the primary directions of the organizational, cultural and educational and national patriotic work among them is analyzed. Besides that the peculiarities of the prisoners and internees repatriation from the European countries are revealed and the contribution of the Ukrainian military sanitary missions into this process is determined. The dissertation provides the analysis on the activity of the Ukrainian educational, cultural, artistic, publishing, cooperative societies. It also defines the main stages and peculiarities of the Ukrainian units formation out of the number of the prisoners and internees. It confirms the contribution of the Ukrainian state, political and military institutes and organizations into this process. The thesis elucidates the format ion of the Ukrainian military emigration as the constituent part of the political emigration.
