Essay

The objective scientific analysis of the printed materials of various genres makes a substantial contribution to the existing views on the complicated processes of socio-political life of the Bukovinians - on the appearance of Ukrainian social trends and political parties and their programmes, on the ways Austro-Hungarian monarchy and Royal Romania treated Ukrainian national press, on the activity of most famous civic bodies of that time. Peculiarities of functioning of national press as well as the range of topics under discussion and the contents of each periodical are dwelt upon in the thesis in a detailed way. Considerable attention is given to the fact that the policy of those periodicals was, apart from the primary objective of providing factual information and describing certain events, to evaluate and analyse the processes of current economic, socio-political and cultural life of the region and attempt to find solutions to the problems revealed. The role of press in formation of the national , awareness of Ukrainians is stressed upon by the author, as well as the role of the idea spread among the Bukovonian population of proclaiming first of an autonomous Ukrainian region and later of an in-dependent state.
