Essay

The main purpose of the dissertation was to describe the ultrastructure, material properties, and attachment-detachment performance in frictional systems of insects. A broad variety of attachment devices, based on the use of frictional forces, was studied. Several new methods were developed. Some general relationships between structure and functions of the systems were revealed. The evolutionary analysis of some systems is provided. The results of the study will also be useful for bionics.
