Essay

This research deals with German parataxis, namely, to its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects. From the formal grammar perspective, the phenomenon analyzed is assumed to be a bi-predicative formation with coordinative relations among its parts. Binal character makes parataxis a constructively flexible unit with a variable structure. Cognitive-semantic organization analysis of German parataxis is carried out on the basis of the highest level abstraction constituents of motivation vs. non-motivation, correspondence vs. non-correspondence. At the same time the semantic-syntactical typology is considered to be a second level abstraction phenomena, that describes semantic-syntactical structure of specific types of parataxis. The communicative-pragmatic aspect is studied by taking into account ways and means of implementing the cognitive-semantic organization of compound sentences in speech. Its interpretation as a form of embodiment of complex speech acts gives a possibility to reveal a communicative-functional potential of parataxis and describes its illocutionary and perlocutionary aims and directions. A new, cognitive-discours interpretation of the compound sentences is presented that is relevant not only to German but to other natural languages as well.
