Essay

This work demonstrates how principles of supramolecular engineering (creation of organized assemblies of functionalised organic or polymer molecules) can be applied for creation of polymer systems with nano-scale dimensions and unique optical and electric properties. Modern methods of Langmuir-Blodgett deposition, spin- and dip-coating, self-assembly and self-organization are employed in organization of organic "building blocks" (organic dyes, conjugated polymers, polyionomers, photo-polymerizable monomers, liquid-crystalline polymers, dendrimers, or functionalised latex nanoparticles) into desirable layered struc-tures suitable for molecular electronics and photonics. Physical properties of such systems are characterised with a set of modern techniques: fluorescence and atomic force microscopy, electron and X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy and voltage-current measurements. Structure- optical properties relationships are defined in each case. The results can be applied in several arrears of practical importance including non-linear optics, photovoltaics, flexible polymer displays and indicators.
