Essay

The object of the thesis is to investigate (for the first time in Ukrainian histo-riography) the process of formation and development of historical science in Ukraine in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and to trace the develop-ment of theory and methodology of history in European comparison, which gave an opportunity to classify and systematize its elements to establish its division in periods. The theoretical and cognitive basis of the historical science in Ukraine in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as in Europe on the whole, was histori-cism, which should be regarded as word outlook. The major compound indication of historicism as the theoretical basis of historical science were the idea of develop-ment, historical germination, political and artistic imaginative character of histo-rical narrative. At Kharkiv, Kyiv and Odessa universities professional historians were trained and criteria of social sciences were worked out. Academic institution was closely connected with scientific societies, that played roles of communicative centers and united professional and amateur discourse. They also did much to promote the formation of national 'image' of historical science and creation of the dominant historical narrative. Being compared to other European countries those processes were more influenced by the state authorities. The author has researched the impact of theoretical-methodological concept on investigations of native historians.
