Essay

On the basis of huge historiographical matter, the dissertation is concerned with the basic concept of the Ukrainian historians as well with their views on particular aspects of the Cossack state’s formation in the era of the Great Liberation War. On the basis of research of the works of the nation’s historians of the 1840’s – the early 20th century, such as (D.Bantysh–Kamensky, M.Markevitch, M. Kostomarov, Maximovitch, P.Kulish, V.Antonovitch, O.Lazarevsky, O.Levitsky, D.Yavornitsky, M.Grushevsky, V.Gerassimtchuk, S.Tomashivsky, M.Slabtchenko, V.Lypinsky and others), the author carries out historiographical analysis of Hetmanship as well as that of the state formation processes in various periods of the Great Liberation War. This analysis makes it possible to coin the disputable issues of formation of the Cossack state as well as the role played by Hetmans Bogdan Khmelnitskiy and Ivan Vygovskiy, by various socio-political association, by the historical and the legal evaluation made by the Zbоriv, Pereyaslav/Moscow and the Gadyatch treaties which were important events in the state formation processes of Ukraine in the mid 17th century.
