Essay

The dissertation deals with the political development of the Slavs of Eastern Europe, and the role of the population of Volhynia and Galicia in this process. Although some traits of the state life appeared in Central Eastern Europe already during the "Great Migration of Peoples" in the 4th - 7th centuries, post-tribal states emerged on the base of the tribal federations of the Eastern Slavs in the 8th - 9th centuries. In the 10th century these formations were included into the great state-empire Rus'. The Volhynian and Pre-Carpathian lands were incorporated into this state-empire as one administrative-territorial unit - a dependent principality. At the end of the 11th century sovereign lands-principalities emerged in the Pre-Carpathian region. In the mid-12th century they constituted Galician land-principality. Volhуnia gained sovereignty in the second half of the 12th century. At the end of the 12th century great Galician-Volhynian state formation emerged in the Southern Rus'. Existing under the conditions of permanent home wars and foreign interventions, this state of Prince Roman and of his descendants Romanovychi regularly revived and thus proved its viability.
