Essay

The research i focuses on ethnic song traditions of Ukrainians in northwestern part of Krasnodar (historical territory of the Black Sea region) that is a regional Kuban phenomenon and an integral part of the Ukrainian music folklore system. The actuality of this work is descrihed by the necessity of Ukrainian folk singing comprehension that functions out of the centre in active and passive forms among the bearers of tradition (since 1792) and in secondary, concert reproduction (since 1818). Ukrainian folk singing (epic, ritual and lyric) in the context of Ukrainian and Kuban history and culture is raised for the first time in Ukrainian and Kuban ethnic musicology based on the materials of field and transcrisptions by the author and also through studies of historical, ethnographic and other written resources of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. The dissertation is the first attempt to shou the complex and systematic studiy of Ukrainian folk singing as a spiritual value of national culture, in which creative work based on the feeling of Ukrainian poetic words, music intonation, Christian ethic and a unique aura of the genotype of many generations of Kuban Ukrainians.
